Lowell MacGregor: Addiction, Recovery, and Taylor Made Retreat

Lowell MacGregor, Executive Director of Taylor Made Retreat, stops by to give Melissa and Staci the lowdown on addiction, recovery, and Taylor Made Retreat. Lowell has been in recovery for over three decades and in the last four years has made Taylor Made Retreat into a recovery house with a 70% success rate.  He’s leveraged his career in concert promotion to fund those clients that can’t afford to pay, and for those clients that can pay, reports a 30% smaller bill than traditional substance abuse recovery programs that first bill insurance. With a focus on the 12 steps based on the big book “Alcoholics Anonymous”, a longitudinal assessment of patterns that keep clients stuck, and focus on connecting to the spirit that flows through all living things, Lowell has created a spiritual focused retreat house from a former bootlegger’s mansion. Welcome, Lowell!

Lowell MacGregor, Executive Director of Taylor Made Retreat, with his three decades of recovery, stops by the chat to talk about:

  • What makes Taylor Made a unique recovery space and program, with such a high success rate.

  • How Taylor Made’s retreat model differs from other in patient programs.

  • Why the addicts/ alcoholic’s brain needs a focus on the 12 steps and connection to the spirit that runs through all living things.

  • Why in his opinion the Hughes Act’s passage in 1970 has actually been an obstacle to getting addicts / alcholics help.

  • How Taylor Made funds recovery for those that can’t afford the program, through Taylor Made Concerts.

  • Translating the 12 steps from Alcoholic’s Anonymous (“the big book”) into a design for living daily life at Taylor Made.

  • Melissa mentions in the interview, Dr. Thomas Joiner’s work on Suicidal Ideation. See the venn diagram she’s talking about.
